Open-source software allows developers to tinker with, improve upon and share code - an approach that threatened Microsoft's business model. Since its inception it has become a mainstay of the open source world, with countless projects-including Microsoft projects such as the Visual Studio Code text editor and the .NET runtime-using GitHub repositories as a place to publish their code to the world and coordinate collaborative development.
GitHub preferred selling the company to going public and chose Microsoft partially because it was impressed by Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella, the report states. It now has more than 28 million users and hosts over 85 million code archives known as repositories. GitHub provides a platform for developers to host and review code and manage projects from open source to enterprise software.
GitHub was last valued at $2 billion after it had received $250 million in its last funding round in 2015.
"We recognize the responsibility we take on with this agreement", Nadella wrote. As Nadella increasingly moves the company away from complete dependence on the Windows operating system to more in-house development on Linux, the company needs new ways to connect with the broader developer community.

Meanwhile, Github has been struggling for 9 months to find a replacement for Chris Wanstrath, who announced he was stepping down as CEO past year. Now, he said, "Microsoft is the most active organization on GitHub in the world".
Now, although the rumoured acquisition is yet to be confirmed by either party, fellow web-based version control hosting service provider Gitlab appears to be ramping up its efforts to lure Github users who might not be entirely happy with Microsoft's reported acquisition of the company. Others struck a more serious tone, as they anxious that the deal might mean GitHub becomes closed off to anything but Microsoft technologies. And as CNBC points out, data from GitHub could also help Microsoft better its artificial intelligence capabilities.
He said the investment stemmed from the firm's theory that developers would drive the new economy, and "GitHub was at the epicenter of that transformation".
Business Insider spoke to Friedman and Wanstrath following news of the acquisition, where the two laid out the master plan for GitHub after the deal closes later this year. An incremental share buyback, beyond Microsoft's recent historical quarterly pace, is expected to offset stock consideration paid within six months after closing.
