Cohen's comments to ABC News, his first significant remarks to a major media outlet since federal prosecutors in NY raided his home, office and hotel room in April, raised the possibility that he may abandon Trump and cooperate with prosecutors investigating his business dealings.
Abrams went on to say what an "amazing statement" it was for Cohen to say that the Federal Bureau of Investigation agents were kind to him when they raided his office and took thousands of his documents.
Cohen was a part of Trump's inner for over a decade, working as his personal lawyer at the Trump Organization and moving with him when he became President.
In New York, federal investigators are scrutinising Mr Cohen for possible bank fraud, wire fraud and campaign finance violations as they examine his efforts to squelch damaging information about Mr Trump in the run-up to the 2016 election, including allegations of an affair by adult-film actress Stormy Daniels.
"My wife, my daughter and my son have my first loyalty and always will", Cohen told George Stephanopoulos in an interview that aired Monday.
"I am not a villain of this story, and I will not allow others to try to depict me that way", he added.
He has not been charged with any crime, but on advice of his counsel, Cohen also declined to address specific questions about matters that are under investigation.
"The New York Times and a third-rate reporter named Maggie Haberman, known as a Crooked H flunkie who I don't speak to and have nothing to do with, are going out of their way to destroy Michael Cohen and his relationship with me in the hope that he will "flip", the president said in an April tweet.

Shambolic Germany sent packing after loss to South Korea
With loss to South Korea , Germany fails to advance to the round of 16 at the FIFA #WorldCup for the first time. But the team never really seemed to recover from its opening 1-0 loss to Mexico.
Still, the clear tenor of the interview as reported by ABC is one of distance, if not outright hostility, on Cohen's part when it comes to Trump.
"When they [the FBI] searched my hotel room and my home, it was obviously upsetting to me and my family". He also called Cohen a "fine person with a wonderful family".
"I don't like the term 'witch hunt, '" he said, adding that he condemned Russian Federation for meddling in the 2016 election.
Prosecutors conducted the raid after a referral from Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading the FBI's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Stephanopoulos said he asked Cohen repeatedly if he was considering cooperating with prosecutors in their probe.
"I believe it was a mistake by those from the Trump campaign who did participate", he said.
Mr Cohen declined to say whether Mr Trump knew about the meeting before it happened, citing the advice of his lawyer. "It was simply an example of poor judgment".
"I want to regain my name and my reputation and my life back", he said.
