The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) - which did not name Honeycutt - said it had been called to reports of a man armed with a gun who was barricaded in a property. Police came to the scene after his mother called to say Honeycutt was acting erratically.
The LAPD did not identify the man involved in the standoff.
When police went into the home hours later, they found Honeycutt dead.
A SWAT team entered the home and located an unresponsive male, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the Los Angeles Police Department tweeted at 3:45 a.m.
Honeycutt began his career at University of California, where he was named co-MVP for 2011. The rep said the death "appears to be a self-inflicted injury by gunshot".
