Garrett on "The Facts of Life" and "Diff'rent Strokes" - died Sunday at her home in Los Angeles, according to her publicist. A cause of death was not immediately available, but Rae was diagnosed a year ago with bone cancer after beating pancreatic cancer, Boll said. In 1979, she was cast as the beloved Edna Garrett on the show The Facts of Life, and she stayed on until 1986 (the show was cancelled two years later).
Viewers quickly fell in love with Mrs. Garrett, who also served as a wise yet sharp-tongued mentor to the young women on "The Facts of Life".
She previously battled pancreatic cancer in private, telling the outlet that the public was unaware she was undergoing chemotherapy until she announced her recovery.
She originated the character of Mrs. Garrett in 1978 during the first season of NBC's comedy "Diff'rent Strokes", then took Mrs. Garrett with her for the spinoff "Facts", which premiered the following season.
