Pacific Gas and Electric spokeswoman Melissa Subbotin says the worker sustained fatal injuries in a vehicle-related accident Saturday on the western edge of the Carr fire in Shasta County.
"He was working in a remote area in risky terrain in supprt of power restoriation efforts", said Melissa Subbotin, a PG&E spokesperson.
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection officials said that fire was started two weeks ago by sparks from the steel wheel of a towed-trailer's flat tire. In all, they have destroyed hundreds of homes, killed eight people and shut down Yosemite National Park.
The Mendocino Complex has grown to be bigger than the Carr fire, which is now 41 percent contained, allowing for some evacuated people to return.
This year, California wildfires have burned more land earlier in the fire season than usual, Cal Fire director Ken Pimlott said during a news conference on Saturday.
Both areas remained under a "red flag warning" issued by the National Weather Service for strong winds, low relative humidity and temperatures topping 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius), all conditions that can drive the growth of wildfires. More than 1,300 homes remained threatened.
A team of 188 specialist Australian and New Zealand firefighters are also on the ground in California to help battle the blazes.
The declaration makes federal funding available to individuals and business owners in Shasta County for temporary housing and home repairs, losses on uninsured property and other recovery programs, the White House said in a statement.
