Jury selection was due to begin on Monday in a second trial on charges including conspiring to launder money, conspiring to defraud the United States, failing to register as a foreign agent and witness tampering.
The plea deal would allow Manafort to avoid a second trial that had been scheduled to start next week in Washington. Manafort is admitting his guilt to those 10 remaining charges by pleading guilty on Friday, according to the plea agreement, but those charges will be dismissed at the time of Manafort's sentencing in Virginia, or at the time of the end of his cooperation, Weissman said.
The court filing, according to the special counsel's office, "alleges a conspiracy against the United States (money laundering, tax fraud, failing to file Foreign Bank Account Reports, violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act, and lying and misrepresenting to the Department of Justice) and a conspiracy to obstruct justice (witness tampering)". Regarding the Washington case, Manafort was accused of acting as an unregistered foreign agent, conspiring to launder money, and lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department about the nature of his work. Manafort would become the most prominent former Trump campaign official to plead guilty in Mueller's investigation, which has cast a shadow over Trump's presidency. The superseding information says that Manafort, with assistance from associate Konstantin Kilimnik, tried to influence two individuals "to induce them to say falsely that they did not work in the United States as part of the lobbying campaign, even though MANAFORT then and there well knew that they did lobby within the United States".
Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, leaves the Federal District Court after a hearing, in Washington, DC, May 23, 2018.
Another approach would be for him to plead guilty without cooperating in hopes of a presidential pardon.
