The New York Police Department confirmed to Bustle that its officers were on the scene at the time of the attack, and that three people were arrested and charged with assault.
Police arrested three protesters for theft and assault on Friday night but none of the Proud Boys.
The incident followed a speech at the Metropolitan Republican Club by Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes, where he reenacted the samurai sword assassination of Japanese socialist leader Inejiro Asanuma, calling it an "inspiring moment."
He said he talked to some of the Proud Boys members involved and they said that the fight broke out when one of the Antifa protesters tried to swat a "Make America Great Again" hat off one of their heads.
Police said two of the people wanted for questioning were seen kicking a victim lying on the sidewalk and the other was observed punching a victim who was trying to run away.
The video (below) seems to confirm NYPD's account, with Antifa members initially throwing objects and punches and the right-wing group quickly responding in kind.

Netflix's Orange is the New Black is coming to an end
The Netflix series will come to an end for good with season seven in 2019 and the cast are already saying their goodbyes. To go along with the sad new, the cast of Orange Is the New Black has shared a goodbye video for their fans.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the NYPD is "fully investigating" the incident.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called on the NYPD to arrest the perpetrators. Following the violent encounter, which took place after a Republican event in New York City, BuzzFeed News reported that the Proud Boys were not arrested, but the protesters were. Cuomo asked, pointing out that they have been designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
"Last night the Metropolitan Republican Club was vandalized by the leftist hate group Antifa, who also left a note promising 'this is just the beginning" and threatening more violence", the Metropolitan Republican Club wrote on Facebook Friday afternoon.
Cuomo also blamed President Donald Trump in part for inciting the violence.
Despite this, the Metropolitan Republican Club has not walked back its decision to invite McInnes and his followers to their event.
District 24 Councilmember and Queens district attorney candidate Rory Lancman said it was "revolting to see white supremacists commit a hate crime on the streets of New York City - in full view of the NYPD - and for none of them to be arrested or prosecuted".
The NYPD released photos of three men they want to question in connection with the Friday night violence.
"This is NY", she said. Thus far, no one has filed a complaint with the NYPD regarding this incident.
