But when Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum went after his Republican opponent Ron DeSantis' associations with racists at a debate on Wednesday, a clip of the moment racked up more than 4 million views.
"That is what corruption is, when you get something you shouldn't have had, and then you give something to people who are trying to influence you".
That's when the discourse between DeSantis and Gillum turned nasty.
In one of the most powerful moments of the night, Gillum confronted DeSantis, a former US representative, over the bigoted tenor his campaign had taken on in the weeks since the Trump-backed Republican told voters not to "monkey this up" by voting for his black opponent.
Newly released messages between Andrew Gillum, the Democratic candidate for Florida governor, and a lobbyist friend seem to contradict his claim that his brother had purchased tickets to see the Broadway musical, "Hamilton". And it hollered through this room...he's got neo-Nazis helping him out in the state. Gillum replies back that getting the ticket is "awesome news". Rhodes also was behind another racist robocall targeting Gillum in August, as well as similar calls in Spokane, California, Iowa and Virginia.
When asked about this by DeSantis during their October 21 debate, Gillum insisted that he "didn't take free trips from anybody". "Why would an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation agent posing as a contractor give him a $1,000 ticket to 'Hamilton?'". "As the fifth of seven kids to my mother and father and the first to graduate from high school, I learned early you don't take anything for free, and you certainly don't take anything for granted, that your word is your bond".

Early voting for general election kicks off in Florida
Midland County Election Administrator Deborah Land said out of 84,945 registered voters in her county, 3,546 had voted by 4 p.m. He said the line "was moving pretty fast" and that the election workers "know what they are doing, so it wasn't bad at all".
"Ron is being Don and that's Donald Trump, neglecting all sense of reason and facts", Gillum said. The documents differ from Gillum's account on Sunday when he denied during a Florida gubernatorial debate that the tickets were a gift.
"I know firsthand that when we start going down that road, it can be very, very deadly", DeSantis said. At the time, we believed that they were reserved by friends of Adam's, Mike Miller, and when I got there after work got my ticket, we went in and saw, it assumed my brother paid for it and so far as I know that was the deal.
Florida Today's Isadora Rangel pressed Gillum on how he'd hold the sugar industry accountable, pointing to his close ties with Tallahassee lobbyist Sean Pittman - who has represented Florida Crystals, a major player in the industry - and his past statements he wouldn't demonize workers who rely on the industry. Gillum also took a trip to Costa Rica where he and his wife stayed in a villa.
However, POLITICO is reporting that newly released information from Adam Corey's lawyer indicates Gillum did not pay for the accommodations. Gillum has insisted that the "Hamilton" tickets came from his brother.
When the text messages showed a different story, he said he was unaware they came from Miller and castigated DeSantis and critics for "engaging in stereotypes" about black men.
He said he released his receipts from his travel to NY and Costa Rica that are being reviewed by the Florida Commission on Ethics, and criticized DeSantis for withholding receipts from the Naples Daily News for travel through his congressional office.
