The Dutchman looked on course to become F1's youngest pole sitter after the first runs in Q3 setting another new track record that put him almost 0.2s off the rest of the field, but out of nowhere, Ricciardo found 0.3s on his final run to claim a third career pole position.
"I knew the pace was in the vehicle, Max showed that all weekend from start to finish".
"I still wasn't convinced it was the cleanest lap, but I've got to relax a little".
After taking pole for the first time at a race other than Monaco, Ricciardo was ecstatic in the auto, leaving his engineers in stitches with his celebration, before making his push for quote of the season when being interviewed on the track.
Ricciardo made sure to applaud his Red Bull teammate for ensuring the team had a lock on the front row of the grid for the first time in five years.
"I'm really, really happy with it", said Hamilton. They were in a league of their own in general up until qualifying and even in qualifying. "That's as good as I could get".
"Yesterday was alright, so we'll see what happens", concluded Vettel, who notably has never finished on the podium in Mexico City. "Qualifying was pretty good for me". The reigning world champion - who needs to finish seventh or higher to claim a fifth title - looked out of sorts during the opening practice sessions on Friday. I had some snaps here and there, but it just didn't come together so I'm quite happy though.
Despite his post-qualifying optimism, Hamilton expects the Red Bulls to be too fast to compete with in race trim.
Hamilton said his Mercedes felt like a completely different vehicle than it had done 24 hours previously.
"But we're here to try and compete, so we will do the best we can to have a real race".
"We tried to make the best of it and I thought it was going to be enough with the problems we had, but it's still good to be second".
As for his prospects of victory tomorrow, Hamilton said he didn't think the Red Bull's pace in qualifying has been a flash in the pan, and added that he expected them to be equally strong in the race itself.
The Australian has suffered seven retirements in 18 races this year and his long and triumphant whoop over the team radio, and some typically colourful language afterwards, said it all.
