ABC News reported on Thursday, citing Turkish officials, that Pompeo had listened to an audio recording of Washington Post columnist and USA resident Khashoggi's murder inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.
President Donald Trump on Thursday said that he now believes journalist Jamal Khashoggi to be dead and warned of "very severe" consequences if Saudi Arabia is proved to be responsible. He said, "Each of those meetings, I stressed the importance of them conducting a complete investigation of the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, and they made a commitment, they said they would do that".
Asked if Khashoggi was dead, he said, "It certainly looks that way".
Meanwhile, some of the strongest circumstantial evidence yet linking Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to Khashoggi's presumed torture and murder emerged on Thursday. People close to the White House have already been briefed and given General Assiri's name.
The state-run Anadolu Agency also quoted the minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, as saying that Turkey would share "with the world" the results of its investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance.
In his brief comments to reporters, Pompeo also stressed the "longstanding strategic relationship" between the US and Saudi Arabia.

Twitter suspended a pro-Saudi bot operation spreading tweets about the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi after NBC News raised questions, the network reported. But we'll see what happens'. Turkish officials have reportedly said they have recordings indicating that Khashoggi was killed and dismembered inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul when he traveled there on routine business.
A Turkish forensic police officer searches for evidence at the Saudi Arabian consulate on October 17, 2018 in Istanbul.
A report by the Washington Post - for which Khashoggi was a contributor - said Thursday that Trump-allied House Republicans are digging up right-wing dirt on the journalist in an effort to somehow lessen the significance of his death for US foreign policy.
Authorities widened the geographic focus of the search after tracking the routes and stops of cars that left the Saudi consulate and the consul's residence on October 2, the day Khashoggi was last seen, the senior officials said. But one of the key figures in the Saudi-U.S. alliance is receiving particular scrutiny for his role, or lack thereof, in the response: Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law. He said Saudi officials, including the crown prince and his father King Salman, had promised a transparent probe. "He has not heard a tape", his spokeswoman Heather Nauert told ABC News in an email.
While it's true Khashoggi was drawn toward more radical streams of thought in his youth, he later moved toward a liberal, secular point of view, those who have tracked his career say.
