Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who had said Wednesday morning that he expected the Senate's next term to be focused on confirmations, followed suit with his own statement wishing Sessions well and praising his "steadfast commitment to the rule of law".
Following the conclusion of the midterm elections, Trump announced the man taking over the Justice Department would be Matthew Whitaker, Mr Sessions' chief of staff. "A permanent replacement will be nominated at a later date", Trump tweeted. The Justice Department on Wednesday indicated that Whitaker would indeed supervise the Mueller investigation. The president previously said he would not have named Sessions to head the Justice Department had he known the AG would recuse himself from the Russian Federation probe.
Mr Trump has at various times belittled Mr Sessions as "beleaguered", "VERY weak", and "DISGRACEFUL".
The president has repeatedly criticised Mr Sessions, a former Republican senator who was among the first to support Mr Trump's presidential candidacy.
"Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been no friend to human rights, including over criminal justice and immigration policies".
