French authorities on Sunday defended aggressive police actions to contain violence at yellow vest protests after a policeman was seen briefly brandishing a gun at a surging crowd in Paris.
Speaking on a visit to Chad where he was visiting French troops serving in the Sahel region's anti-extremist Operation Barkhane, Macron said, "The time has come for order, calm and harmony". Tear gas and water cannon were used by riot police in several places to control and disperse the protesters.
In Paris, the scene of fierce clashes and widespread destruction in previous weeks, the protests were mainly peaceful.
According to Paris police, only 800 protesters had taken to the Paris streets, compared to 4,000 a week before and 10,000 the prior week.
In a protective move, the palace of Versailles just outside Paris will be shut for the day after yellow vest protesters said they will hold a demonstration at the famous chateau that was home to succession of French kings until the French Revolution in 1789.
He denounced the decapitation of an effigy of Macron, violent attacks on police after an officer's motorcycle was taken by protesters on the Champs-Elysee, and that outside the Sacre Coeur church some had sung a song by comedian and political activist Dieudonne, who has been convicted for anti-Semitic insults.
"There can be no trivializing of such gestures which must draw unanimous condemnation and be punished by the law", Philippe tweeted.
