Trump, who ran for president in 2016 on a platform of holding China accountable for cyber espionage, currency manipulation, and intellectual property theft, has attempted to rectify Washington's trade deficit with Beijing by instituting tariffs on a variety of goods and services.
Lighthizer was a key player in the trade deal agreed to by the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
China expressed confidence on Wednesday that it can reach a trade deal with the United States, a sentiment echoed by U.S. President Donald Trump a day after he warned of more tariffs if the two sides could not resolve their differences.
"Unless extended, they will end 90 days from the date of our wonderful and very warm dinner with President Xi in Argentina", Trump tweeted.

Trump has said China is supposed to start buying agricultural products immediately and cut its 40 percent tariffs on U.S. vehicle imports.
Hours later, Bloomberg News reported that officials have begun preparing to restart imports of US soybeans and liquefied natural gas - the first sign confirming the claims of Trump and the White House that China had agreed to start buying some USA products "immediately".
Chinese officials have been told to take necessary steps for the purchases, according to two officials with knowledge of the discussions. To that end, Xi purportedly agreed to purchase a "not yet agreed upon" amount of agricultural, energy, and industrial product from US manufacturers in exchange for the Trump administration deferring a pending increase in tariffs on more than $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. As a result, China reduced government subsidies for solar panel production, seeming to acquiesce to US pressure.
Washington also expects China to promptly address structural issues including intellectual property theft and forced technology transfers, U.S. officials have said. The latter is still more of a pledge than an action, as the Bloomberg analysts note.
Failure would raise the specter of a major escalation in the trade battle, with fresh US tariff action and Chinese retaliation possibly as early as March.
"This is the first time we've had an agreement between the two president's", he explained.
The Commerce Ministry's website stated, "China will start from implementing specific issues on which consensus has been reached, and the sooner, the better".
"It will be a win-win situation if a deal is realized. Chinese society should maintain a calm attitude", it said.

It will now be considered a 'controlled substance.' This could be a game changer on what is. considered to be the worst and most risky, addictive and deadly substance of them all, ' the president wrote in a pair of tweets. Chinese imports of American soybeans fell 95 percent in October compared to a year ago, damaging the prospects of Midwest farmers who are in the middle of harvest. 'If China cracks down on this 'horror drug, ' using the Death Penalty for distributors and pushers, the results will be incredible!'
