Another possibility: Fairfax simply hangs on as he disputes the allegations. Hours after the second sexual assault accusation emerged Friday, Patrick Hope, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, said he will introduce articles of impeachment against Fairfax if he does not step down by today.
According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, two staffers from Fairfax's office at the state capitol and two staffers who worked for his political action committee resigned on Friday after a former classmate from Duke University, Meredith Watson, accused Fairfax of rape.
"Ms. Watson was raped by a basketball player during her sophomore year at Duke".
Watson is the second woman to allege that Fairfax, who has been urged by leaders to step down, sexually assaulted her.
When news of the allegations surfaced last week, Fairfax, in a tweeted statement, called the accusations "false and unsubstantiated" and a "totally fabricated story".
"Even in the most hard times, including ones like these, that's when it's most important to adhere to our highest values as Americans", Fairfax told the Post.
Two women have accused Fairfax of sexual assault. Now she wants Fairfax to resign from office, she said through her lawyer.

"When I was confronted with the images yesterday I was appalled that they appeared on my page", Northam said during a press conference on February 2, "but I believe then and now, that I am not either of the people in that photo". "There are still some very deep wounds in Virginia, and especially in the area of equity".
King asked Northam whether he owned the distinctive plaid trousers worn by the person in blackface in the photo in his yearbook. I have also learned why the use of blackface is so offensive and yes, I knew it in the past. But he could not explain how the photo wound up there, or why he initially had taken responsibility for it. "I really think where we are now, we need to get to the truth", Northam said Sunday. That person was granted anonymity because details of the incident have not been made public. She has accused Fairfax of assaulting her at the Democratic National Convention in 2004 in Boston.
Since the two allegations against Fairfax were made, many top Democrats running for president in 2020 have called for Fairfax's resignation, including Sens.
Virginia's Democratic congressional delegation was split.
Northam has refused to step down, despite demands from his peers and adversaries who want him to leave his post. Steve Newman, the Senate's pro tem, serve as both a voting senator and temporary lieutenant governor. Northam told The Washington Post that there is a higher reason for the "horrific" reckoning over a racist photograph that appeared in his medical school yearbook. Attorney General Mark Herring has also admitted to having worn blackface.
House Speaker Kirk Cox, the Republican who would become governor if all three Democrats resigned, said it was too soon to say whether he would support impeachment.
The attorney general's future also remains in question.
Meanwhile, the Virginia Black Caucus, and several members of the Democratic party have called for Fairfax to resign.
