A second woman has come forward to accuse Virginia Lt. -Gov. Watson reportedly told Fairfax about the incident.
"Ms. Watson was upset to learn that Mr. Fairfax raped at least one other woman after he attacked her", the statement continued. "Similarly, she is not seeking any financial damages", Smith said.
Later in the day, the governor issued a statement to government employees, saying, "You have placed your trust in me to lead Virginia forward - and I plan to do that". Fairfax denied that accusation. It is demonstrably false.
"As one of seven working on a 359-page yearbook, I can not endorse or associate myself with every photo, entry, or word on each page", he wrote, adding he did not appear in or take any of the photos in question.
"I have passed two full field background checks by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and run for office in two highly contested elections with nothing like this being raised before", he wrote.
In response to Tyson's statement, Fairfax issued another statement of denial, stating that he had "never done anything like what she suggests". Following inquiries from AP and other media, Watson's lawyer confirmed that while in college she accused another man, a basketball player at Duke, of raping her when she was a sophomore. She went to the Dean, who provided no help and discouraged her from pursuing the claim further. The two were friends but never dated or had any romantic relationship.
Fairfax, who would replace Northam if he resigned, has cast the allegations as a political smear. When he asked her to come with him to his hotel room to pick something up, she explained she reciprocated his initial advances when he began to kiss her, but that the interaction soon became forceful.
"It has been a painful week for all Virginians, and I am deeply sorry for causing this distraction from your important work", he said.
Watson's allegation is, if anything, more substantial than that of his initial accuser, Vanessa Tyson.

Scripps College in California, where Tyson now serves as an associate politics professor, also confirmed in a Thursday evening statement that Tyson had previously "shared with several members of the Scripps community the details about a 2004 sexual assault", which were "consistent" with her written statement. Tyson says Fairfaix, then a law student working as an aide to Democratic vice-presidential nominee John Edwards, held her head down and forced her to perform oral sex.
"I can not believe, given my obvious distress, that Mr. Fairfax thought this forced sexual act was consensual".
