The Election Commission on Sunday announced that the 17th Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases starting April 1, followed by counting of votes on May 23. "Wishing all political parties and candidates the very best for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections". The Commission also said that official voter slip bearing the photo of the elector (wherever present in the roll) will be distributed at least five days before the polling date.
The Jammu and Kashmir assembly was dissolved in November a year ago, months after the Mehbooba Mufti-headed government in the state fell following the BJP withdrawing support to it in June.
The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Congress alleged that the Assembly election was deferred due to the Centre's "mishandling" of the situation.
Earlier on March 7, the Election Commission of India (ECI) said that the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 schedule is likely to be announced "any day", PTI reported.
A poll survey on Sunday predicted that the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) may get a thin majority with 285 seats, 13 more than the magic figure of 272, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may get 34 seats less than it got in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
