"Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen will be leaving her position, and I would like to thank her for her service", Trump tweeted Sunday. Kevin McAleenan, the current U.S. Customs and Border Protection commissioner, will become the acting head of Homeland Security.
Nielsen officially announced her resignation on late Sunday night.
Prior to becoming DHS secretary, Nielsen was Kelly's chief of staff at the agency - which has an annual budget of more than $40 billion and employs almost a quarter of a million people in multiple subdivisions.
She later served as John F. Kelly's chief of staff at Homeland Security before becoming Deputy Homeland Security Secretary in December 2017.
US Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen left her post on Sunday, President Donald Trump announced on his Twitter account.
None of it appears to have been enough for Trump.
"Ms. Nielsen had been pressured by Mr. Trump to be more aggressive in stemming the influx of migrant crossings at the border", The New York Times reported.
The development comes after Trump threatened to close the U.S. -Mexico border. The US can't-even with a wall-physically prevent the entry of unauthorized immigrants onto US soil. But asylum should be limited to those who have a demonstrable reason why they personally have to flee their homes.

The one silver lining here seems to be that there's not much more McAleenan, or any Nielsen replacement, can legally do.
"It cuts off the head of the agency at a time when there's chaos at the border", he explained.
"We must address the root causes driving families from the Central American countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador to flee for their lives in the first place", one Senate Democratic source said.
"[Nielsen] held one of the most hard posts in the USA government at one of the most hard times for the issues DHS faces and worked for a very hard boss", said Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond.
Nielsen's tenure at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been marred by controversy and deep tension conflict between the Democrats and Republicans.
McAleenan will join acting secretaries at the Pentagon and Interior Department.
Ding Dong, the frightful HHS Secretary is gone, and here's hoping that the United States will soon be adopting a far more sane, rational immigration policy! He's "not an ideologue or fire breather", an anonymous DHS officially tells CNN.
